Drummer Rudy Royston steps to the fore with this boundless power trio from New York, featuring tenor-/soprano saxophonist Jon Irabagon and double bassist Yasushi Nakamura.

The Orion Trio is the result of an evolution that began five years ago when these three musicians first played together in a small bar in New York City. Despite the small line-up they immediately started playing everything at will, from swing to funk, gospel to metal and drum ’n’ bass to classical compositions. Drummer Rudy Royston takes the lead as a composer on the album Rise of Orion, on which a cosmic journey along the stars of the Orion constellation is interchanged with new versions of Bill Withers’ Make a Smile For Me and Henry Purcell’s Dido’s Lament.

Alongside jazz drums, Rudy Royston developed himself as a classical percussionist and composer. Coming from Denver, Colorado, the drummer made name in New York as a remarkably versatile sideman with, among others, Bill Frisell, Dave Douglas and J.D. Allen. Saxophonist Jon Irabagon, a former winner of the Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition and the Downbeat Critics’ Poll, could be heard in, among others, Mostly Other People Do the Killing and the Mary Halverson Quintet. Japanese bassist Yasushi Nakamura played with, among others, Wynton Marsalis en Hank Jones.

‘Rudy Royston is a drummer of silvery poise and subtle power’ (New York Times).

‘One of jazz’s most tasteful and versatile drummers’ (Chicago Reader).

‘Drawing on a background in orchestral percussion, the native Texan generates an enormous range of color and detail from a drum kit, his muscular playing fueled by swing and groove’ (Downbeat).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
